Borderlands

What happens when you combine two of the most popular gaming genres, first person shooters and role playing games into one action packed, stats building, loot filled, guns blazing hybrid? According to Gearbox Software you would have a created a "Role Playing Shooter", or more specifically, you would have their newest offering, the stylized post apocalyptic atmosphere Borderlands. With so many sequels on the horizon and a multitude of games that are churned out ready made to be tagged as more of the same, it is refreshing to see a company take an independent approach to delivering the adrenaline pumping carnage that gamers crave.

What would you get if you took parts of some of the most popular shooters of recent and melded them together into one cohesive package? What would arise from various elements of Unreal, Tribes, Halo, BF2142, Planetside and more, and would be at home running smoothly on the UT3 Engine and emphasizing team based strategic warfare on large multiplayer maps? Timegate Studios is banking on the hope that you will answer their new futuristic FPS, the somewhat oddly named Section 8.

Do Sex and Violence sell more games than just good gameplay?

As the saying goes, sex sells. There is little debating that, research and countless marketing campaigns have proven this to be true time and time again. In a variety of mediums, the inclusion of violence of a graphic nature has shown to attract a portion of the market that wouldn't necessarily of taken notice otherwise. Generally the more gruesome and spine chilling the display, the more buzz and hype for the product. Some movies and games that were at best mediocre have gone on to sell blockbuster amounts arguably on their promotion of one or both of these controversial areas more than on the actual quality of the remaining content.

Its back and Titan sized: [-The Mausoleum-] UT3 Greed Server!

There have been a few ongoing changes made to the Mausoleum game server, from running different variants of the Unreal series over the years to the last iteration where it briefly ran Left 4 Dead. With the release of the newest UT3 patch and Titan bonus pack, it has come back not just loaded with the aforementioned patch, but featuring an interesting new combination of game modes. It now is the public Reaper's Bane UT3 Greed gametype server and is located in the central United States to give good solid gameplay from coast to coast. This will be in place until it transitions over to its permanent place as a pure VCTF server.

The Last Remnant

Few companies originating as either a console or PC developer that have
met such widespread recognition and continued success on their
respective platform have stayed as isolated to their beginnings as
Squaresoft. Through countless blockbuster titles and appearances on
almost every console system for the last dozen years, including the
legendary Final Fantasy series, Chrono Trigger, Xenogears, Vagrant Story, and many more, the only crossovers to the PC were the ports of Final Fantasy VII
and VIII, both truly epic titles that lost something in the
translation. Sure, fans and modders came to the games rescue and made
many fixes, from restoring the original soundtrack to upgrading the
graphics to better PC resolutions, but getting something made less as
an afterthought didn't seem to be in the cards.

Drakensang: The Dark Eye

Back in the late 1990's and early 2000's you could bring up a
discussion on good RPG's and a couple of things would predictably happen. First,
you could either be alluding to the console style of Japanese RPG's and the bounty of quality titles from Squaresoft alone in that period, or
you could be thinking of the more Western PC style of the CRPG and the Black Isle era. The former being geared to appeal to the average
teenager and his limited attention span and the latter generally a much more indepth and cerebral
affair. The PC discussion would undoubtly encompass masterpieces such as the legendary Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment, Icewind Dale, and Wizardry, and as they were tossed about much debate would arise in regard to which offered the most engrossing and realistically crafted experience.

In the upcoming weeks, a new fantasy RPG from the talented design team at the famous Bioware studios will be delivered to the gaming public. With numerous titles to their credit including Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, KoToR, and Mass Effect, it is safe to say that the potential for this release to be epic is more likely than not. After their foray into the futuristic settings found in Mass Effect, the return to the tried and true realm of swords and sorcery should warm many a minstrels heart as they prepare for their journey through Dragon Age: Orgins.

Sacred 2: Fallen Angel

Ascaron Entertainment continues their labor of love with the release of Sacred 2: Fallen Angel. Much like the first Sacred and its followup expansion Sacred: Underworld, this fantasy based outing is a frantic button mashing, monster slaying, loot grind housed in the expansive setting of Ancaria. The same basic principles that made Diablo and its offspring so popular live on in the German born Sacred bloodline. Obviously this type of game is not going to offer a storyline of particularly epic proportions, nor will it win any Academy Awards for voiceacting. The objective here is not hard to decipher, it is to present a large and varied array of blood thirsty enemies, and throw them at you wave after wave. Sacred 2 shows the developers took this to heart and delivers.

Lets face it, zombies are damn cool. Anything that is good otherwise becomes great with the addtion of the walking undead. The only thing that carries a level of pure awesomeness more than the inclusion of a rotting zombie or two is a full scale zombie apocalypse. In seriousness, there is a morbid fascination through cultures the world over with newly reanimated corpses emerging from the grave and shambling along in their endless quest to feast on the brains of the living. Few things raise our hackles like the groans of the undead or the sound of a rotten foot being dragged along through the night behind its decaying owner.
